Ummm, could you please explain/support this statement a bit more?

Most people's involvement in the stock market is indirect and immediately inaccessible, i.e. locked up in retirement funds until ... well, retirement -- 10, 20, 30 years from now. What the market does has zero effect on my ability to spend money in the here and now.
