This article does a good job of dealing with the predictable factors but ignores all kinds of real world costs of home ownership, e.g. major, unanticipated replacement costs like air conditioning ($30K or more), roof ($10K or more), sewer ($20K or more), and other essential systems, unrestricted property tax increases in popular cities like Austin, Texas, plummeting resale value due to bad actors in the financial industry, bad neighbors, etc.
I've never been more poor or more stressed/frustrated than when I "owned" a house. It was only when I started renting that I gained the predictability in costs that enabled me to start saving. Hard pass.
