Every single technical innovation to date has gone through the same cycle. Non-linear (computer-based) video editing was going to be the end of the post production industry. Desktop publishing and the early Internet were going to be the end of print and publishing, and yet people are still buying and reading printed newspapers and books 30 years later. Office automation suites like MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and their online Google successors were going to be the end of office work and workers.

The only human workers who've been eclipsed have been the one's who refuse to learn and to change with the times. Tale as old as time.
While I agree with your conclusion ("Businesses that want to remain competitive now need to start hiring “augmented” candidates, that is, people who are comfortable using technology."), I think you need to check your history.
