No one but OpenAI insiders really know what Q* even is at this point. My take is that most of what we're seeing in the media is fear and ignorance being leveraged for clicks.
What Q* has been rumored to be is mathematical problem solving at the grade school level, which (even if true) wouldn’t necessarily lead to other, broader AGI breakthroughs.
And at present I have no idea how one might even go about meaningfully comparing that with Natural Language Processing (NLP)/Natural Language Understanding (NLU) progress in chat, based on the information available in Large Language Models (LMMs).
As I see it, solving math problems is still a fairly narrow focus, like chat, games, security, etc -- other current areas of narrow rather than general AI focus.
You're a visual artist. I imagine that in your day, you might create original art, while chatting with friends and colleagues, and then relax with a new game. That's one way I understand general, human-level intelligence.
When I look for examples of that in AI today, I just don't see it or anything that could plausibly lead to it anytime soon. And I've been developing software and reading about AI for 30+ years.
