Don't assume. Don't assume that the people you're talking down to "don't understand science", for example. Don't assume that I'm lazy or that I haven't done any due diligence. You were wrong on all three counts, but you still persist.
If you must assume, try assuming the best rather than the worst.
You might also look into inquiry vs advocacy. For example, "Did you see and follow any of the data links?" rather than "Don't be lazy."
