I think it's worth differentiating today's "Hollywood", mainstream dreck from "indie" and especially "foreign" films.

Most recently, I saw The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic (2021, Finnish, subtitles), which was excellent, original, well-written, well-acted, well-made, and very compelling. These films are out there and available from major outlets, e.g. Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, etc. You just have to look for them (and endure the occasional disappointing "clunker" -- yeah, I'm lookin' at you Lotawana).

Other recent favorites in include Shoplifters, Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game, Shorebreak: The Clark Little Story, The Lost King, and BlackBerry.

Note: I use "film" to describe what I consider cinematographic art and "movie" to describe what I consider to be profit-driven entertainment media, which can still be fun but is typically less meaningful.
