That's literally all they are, and no amount of uncharacteristically ignorant and biased brow-beating will change that fact.

These algorithms analyze vast volumes of text written by humans and then calculate the probability of the best next word to form their output.

Stochastic. Parrots.

There are LOTS of other kinds of AI out there, but this particular one is just what it has been very accurately called by credentialed computer scientists and researchers -- experts in the field, who actually DO think quite a bit for themselves.
